About the Artist:
Einstein, born in Detroit, Michigan in 1946, is widely recognized for his large scale Color- Field paintings of the late 1970s. In 1989, he re-located to California settling in the Palm Springs area where he taught color theory, painting and drawing at College of the Desert in Palm Desert for over twenty years, retiring in 2012.
When asked, Einstein describes himself as a “process painter” who explores the dimensions of light, color and nature. In the late 1960s, he found inspiration from Zen brush painting (calligraphy) while studying in Japan. In the 1970s, the Color- Field painters (Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and Philip Guston and others) made an impact on his approach to art with their more sublime expressions of color, form and movement. These two influences have since permeated his work in unique ways.
On display are select works from two different series by the artist that highlight two very different painting approaches: Heart Rings (4), mixed media on paper, 2010, and Infinity, 2001, acrylic on canvas. Einstein continues to paint daily in his Palm Springs studio where he explores new media.
