New Festival Lawn Is Near Completion in Downtown Cathedral City
Crews have been working all day to install the new Festival Lawn, adjacent to the new Bonta Restaurant and UltraMAX Theater, in Downtown Cathedral City.
The new Festival Lawn is more than 28,000 square feet of festival space which can easily accommodate up to 120 ten-feet by ten-feet festival tents.
The first event to utilize the space this upcoming weekend is West Coast Artists’ for its Town Square Art Affaire – art show, January 10 – 11, 2015.
Final improvements to come over the next few weeks are sidewalks along the south end of the Festival Lawn and improved aesthetics around its border.
Several people have asked why the City went with natural grass instead of artificial grass. There are several reasons. First, the cost of installing artificial grass is about 4 times the expense of natural grass. Most importantly, the purpose of the Festival Lawn is to allow people to sit during planned events like Shorty’s Rib Fest on March 14 & 15 and listen to concerts, picnic and relax. Artificial grass, especially in direct sunlight, heats up quickly similar to blacktop or concrete and can be hot to the touch and too hot for the paws of pets. Whereas natural grass is much cooler. Finally, the Festival Lawn is a temporary venue in hopes of building the permanent Festival Parks in the future.
Come by this Saturday and Sunday and enjoy this new venue in Cathedral City! Check out some wonderful art as well!
