Managers of the Mary Pickford Theatre in Downtown Cathedral City received unanimous city council approval on Wednesday to continue operating its drive-in movie theater across Highway 111 until at least May 31st. The drive-in has been an oasis for movie lovers not wanting to watch Netflix or other streaming movie options at home.
Although it is likely that the main theater will open soon as Riverside County is expected to move into the Red Tier of the COVID-19 Reopening Plan established by the governor; however, the managers want to continue operating the drive-in as many moviegoers enjoy this type of venue, especially while we still face a global pandemic.
Movie operators have been hit exceptionally hard by the COVID-19 pandemic as indoor theaters have been mostly closed in California and other states for nearly a year. Hollywood has been reluctant to release blockbuster movies as limited viewing opportunities hits their own profit margins. Those two factors have caused fewer movies to be released and thus less people going to the movies.
