Agnes Pelton Society and the City of Cathedral City Archives Project Presents “City Talks” – Sunday, 1 pm, City Council Chambers

Cathedral City Cove native and professional photographer, Jeff Palmer, will kick-off the speaker series, “CITY TALKS,” with childhood remembrances of growing up in the Cove across the street from the house that he now owns and lives in, historic home of noted mid-century desert artist, Val Samuelson. A short video-documentary interview of Palmer produced by the Agnes Pelton Society and Alan Carvalho of the CC Archives Project, will be viewed that reveals the alarming documentation of racism by Cove land developers as recent as the late 60ʼs; as well as remarkable Smithsonian Institute documents that disclose the narrative of the Coveʼs designation as an artists’ retreat in 1932 (Desert Sun article) and for a time was a destination for many nationally accomplished writers, painters, musician/composers through the 30’s-60, including a discerning and discreet lesbian community.

This talk is a prelude to the “CC Cove Home Tour of Historic and Artists’ Homes” on the following Sunday, February 8. (www.agnespeltonsociety.com), where the midcentury home of Val Samuelson will be the featured house along with three other historic homes, including the Agnes Pelton House and ten CC artists’ open studios.
