Cathedral City High School Symphony Band Chosen to Play at the World-Renown Symphony Center in Chicago

Cathedral City High School is pleased to announce that the CCHS Symphony Band, the school’s top level instrumental ensemble, has been selected from over 500 schools across the country to perform at the world-renown Symphony Center in Chicago, IL, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The Symphony Band will embark on a 5-day performance tour of the city on Thursday, April 2nd, 2015 as part of the Chicago International Music Festival, sponsored by World Projects. The CCHS Band will perform at the National History Museum, a local high school as part of a joint collaboration concert, and at Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center on April 5th. In addition, the CCHS Symphony Band successfully auditioned and was selected to world –premiere a new work for band, titled “Lux Contrapuctum”, by Boston-based composer Brett Abigana. This new work, underwritten by the Chicago International Music Festival, was written specifically for the CCHS Symphony Band, and will have a dedication to the band below its title when the music is published through The Boston Composer’s Coalition (BBC). This is the CCHS Symphony Band’s 11th performance tour in the past 12 years.

The Cathedral City Symphony Band has earned a reputation as one of the finest symphonic organizations in California. It is comprised of the most advanced students in the band program, and performs music of the highest quality, with the ensemble’s approach to music making modeled after the leading collegiate ensembles.

The Symphony Band has performed in such unique and prestigious performance venues and locations as Carnegie Hall (New York City), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), The Kennedy Center (Washington D. C.), St. John’s Smith Square (London, England), Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberg, Germany), Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte (Paris, France), Holy Trinity Church (Stratford, England), and San Francisco. The CCHS Symphony Band has been recognized three times as the California State Level Winner for the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors Project (2008, 2009, 2013), and has recently been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education (2015).

Donations are currently being accepted to assist deserving students to offset their Tour tuition costs. Matthew Howe can be reached at (760.770.0164).
