The City Council voted to approve the Fire Department’s purchase of a new ambulance at the Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, City Council meeting.
The Medix MSV 170 ambulance from Republic Emergency Vehicle Services (EVS), will come equipped with Public Safety Enterprise Communication (PSEC) compatible radios that will be installed and programmed locally. The total cost is $323,392.
The Cathedral City Fire Department currently operates three front-line paramedic ambulances, one out of each fire station. Two ambulances were ordered in June 2021 to replace aging units. Both new units were delayed several months due to a Ford recall. This delay put a significant strain on the entire ambulance fleet and accelerated the need for the third ambulance replacement.
The new ambulance will allow the Cathedral City Fire Department to keep three identical ambulances in the fleet and lower anticipated maintenance costs for the next several years. Production is expected to start within a month with the new ambulance arriving by June 2023.
Residents who have a medical emergency are transported via ambulance to local hospitals by the Cathedral City Fire Department. The city’s highly trained first responders offer the fastest response times and charge patients some of the lowest fees for service in the Coachella Valley.
