City of Cathedral City Partners with Desert Recreation District to Enhance Parks and Recreation Services

The City of Cathedral City has approved landmark agreements with the Desert Recreation District (DRD) to provide comprehensive parks maintenance and recreation programming for residents, marking a significant milestone in the city’s commitment to community services.

The partnership, set to begin July 1, 2025, will bring professional maintenance services to six city parks and introduce diverse recreational programming throughout the community. The agreement follows the successful passage of Measure W, which received overwhelming support with 73.54% of voters in favor.

“This partnership represents the culmination of years of careful planning and community input,” said City Manager Charles McClendon. “For over a decade, we’ve been working to bring comprehensive recreation services to Cathedral City families. Through this agreement with the Desert Recreation District, we’re not just maintaining parks – we’re creating opportunities for our children, families, and seniors to enjoy quality recreational programs right here in their community for generations to come.”

The agreement will enable Cathedral City residents to access DRD’s full spectrum of programs at in-district rates, including art classes, sports leagues, and seasonal events. DRD will maintain key facilities including Dennis Keat Soccer Park, Panorama Park, Ocotillo Park, Century Park, Esperanza Park, and Patriot Park. Additionally, the popular summer swim program at Cathedral City High School will continue under DRD management.

“Parks are more than just green spaces; they are the heart of a community. A place where families gather, friendships are formed, and people of all ages stay active and engaged,” said Kevin Kalman, general manager of the Desert Recreation District. “By working together with Cathedral City, we are not only enhancing the quality of these parks but also investing in programs that strengthen communities and create safer, more vibrant neighborhoods. Recreation opportunities give youth and families positive outlets, help improve mental and physical well-being, and a sense of belonging. We are so excited to take this next step in serving the residents of Cathedral City and ensuring that these parks and programs continue to bring people together for years to come.”

As the largest park and recreation district in California, DRD brings extensive experience managing over 43 parks and recreation facilities across the Coachella Valley, serving more than 380,000 residents. The district will establish a local presence in Cathedral City, with staff available to assist residents with program registration and information.

The partnership is structured through both a Services Agreement and a Tax Transfer Agreement, ensuring sustainable funding for these enhanced community services. The agreements will now proceed to the Riverside Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) for the final annexation process.
