The City Council of Cathedral City, Public Arts Commission, and the Cathedral City LGBT Days Planning Committee will unveil its “Rainbow Crossing,” – a first-of-its-kind crossing in the Coachella Valley that symbolizes and celebrates diversity. The unveiling of the “Rainbow Crossing” will occur on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. near the Bell Tower in downtown along East Palm Canyon Drive at West Buddy Rogers Avenue.

The “Rainbow Crossing” consists of painted stripes within a downtown crosswalk that matches the Rainbow Flag utilized by the LGBT community as a symbol of pride and diversity. Although temporary while a permanent location is determined, the crossing is an important step to recognize the historic progress in the civil rights movement and a kick-off to next week’s Cathedral City LGBT Days scheduled on March 25-27, 2016.

“For more than six months, the Public Arts Commission has worked to bring this symbolism of diversity to Cathedral City,” stated Public Arts Commission Co-Chair Alan Carvalho. “Thanks to the support of the City Council and the enthusiasm of our residents we are able to complete the ‘Rainbow Crossing’ prior to LGBT Days.”

The “Rainbow Crossing” will consists of six colored stripes designed in accordance to the Rainbow Flag created by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 including the color red to symbolize “life,” orange for “healing,” yellow for “sunlight,” green for “nature,” blue for “harmony,” and purple for “spirit.”
