Cathedral City Receives a Beacon Spotlight Award for Energy Conservation

At last night’s council meeting, Deanna Pressgrove, manager of the City’s Environmental and Conservation Department, accepted the Beacon Spotlight Award presented to Cathedral City by the Institute for Local Government.  The award was given to Cathedral City last week at the 2018 League of California Cities Annual Conference & Expo held in Long Beach, CA.

The Beacon Spotlight Award recognized the City’s energy conservation of reducing its total electrical consumption by 8% in one year.  Much of the success is due to the city replacing high energy light bulbs with LED lighting at all street intersections that have lighted street name signs.  Additionally, part of 2017 included the installation of new solar panels behind City Hall, which should provide even greater reduction for 2018.  The Civic Center complex now generates nearly 75% of its own electrical use from the sun.
