Cathedral City’s Ocotillo Park Recognized as “Parks and Recreation Project of the Year”
The City of Cathedral City and designer David Evans and Associates were honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for the City’s new Ocotillo Park as the “Parks and Recreation Project of the Year”. The award was presented to the City Council at last night’s city council meeting by City Engineer John Corella whose department was instrumental in the project’s success.
ASCE recognized Ocotillo Park for its many features including a multi-use sports field, walking path, skateboard park, basketball courts, children’s play areas, adult fitness area, and covered picnic shelters. The Society was impressed with the City’s sustainability techniques with the park’s rock infiltration system to recapture and reuse storm water for irrigation and its utilization of recycled materials, LED solar walking path lights, LED timed sports area lighting, and ambient lighted restrooms. Ocotillo Park was also designed with lush and efficient landscaping including a smart irrigation control system that utilizes rain, sunlight, wind, and moisture sensors to determine the amount of water needed to keep the fields green and vegetation healthy.
Ocotillo Park will now be considered for the entire Regional 9 Competition against other parks for engineering design and techniques.
