City Council of Cathedral City Renamed Two City Streets in Honor of Local Students

Mayor Raymond Gregory and the entire city council unveiled two new street signs on Wednesday to honor two high school students from Cathedral City for their academic excellence.  The Annual Student Street Naming Ceremonies recognize Ms. Melanie Vazquez of Cathedral City High School and Mr. Mario Berry of Mount San Jacinto High School by renaming the street adjacent to their respective schools for one year.

Melanie Vazquez

Graduating with an earned 4.89 GPA at Cathedral City High School, Melanie has excelled in academics as well as athletics.  She serves as the Associated Student Body’s Executive Secretary and is an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate.  Melanie belongs to the Marching and Symphony bands playing the clarinet and has been a member of the CCHS swim team for the past four years.  Upon graduation, she plans to attend University of Chicago, dual majoring in political science and philosophy.  Additionally, she plans to attend law school and pursue a law degree.

Mario Berry

Completing his senior year with straight A’s on his report card and attending College of the Desert, Mario has juggled many life challenges while pursuing his education.  He lives with his grandmother he calls “mom” and serves as her primary caregiver.  His only respite is when a healthcare worker comes once a week or when his older sister comes over to visit.  This past year, the home they were renting was being sold.  Mario actively searched and found a new apartment for his family that lives modestly on a very limited income.  Coincidentally, the apartment is located on the street that is named after Mario.  Upon graduation, he will continue his associate’s degree studies at College of the Desert and plans to finish his bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Irvine.
