The City of Cathedral City reminds residents that Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, kicks off FIND Food Bank‘s #HungerActionMonth. This is a time when our community comes together to raise awareness of hunger. September serves as a reminder that while prices continue rising, so does food insecurity for working families. More employed people are turning to food banks to help make ends meet while housing, gas, medicine, and electricity are increasingly harder to afford.
FIND Food Bank is the leading organization in the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert that provides nutritional food to more than 150,000 residents each month. Food insecurity varies greatly across the county. In some communities, more than half of all residents are food insecure. These include working adults, school children and seniors who struggle to make ends meet. Many often weigh the need of buying food with paying for rent and purchasing medications.
FIND Food Bank wants residents to know the many ways you can help make a difference in the fight against hunger. Here are three actions YOU can take to end hunger:
VOLUNTEER. Attend a volunteer orientation to learn more about safety guidelines and FIND’s work to end hunger. Please visit findfoodbank.org/get-involved/volunteer to sign up to distribute food at FIND’s free mobile markets or help in the warehouse in Indio, CA.
DONATE. Click findfoodbank.org/donate to make a direct online donation. Monetary donations help FIND Food Bank serve over 150 distribution sites best by allowing them to bring in the most needed food items in bulk. You can also donate food. FIND encourages food donation drop-offs to their community agency partners like Cathedral City Senior Center. FIND and agency partners welcome non-expired shelf-stable proteins, creamy peanut butter, canned tuna, canned chicken, etc. Donating food to our local food pantries gets food directly in the hands of our residents who need it most, while FIND continues its efforts in the distribution of fresh produce, fruits, meat, and dairy to all of our Valley’s hunger relief organizations.
LEARN. Educate yourself on the current hunger crisis and the growing number of people who are food insecure. There are resources to get you started on FIND’s website and they will share some fast facts throughout September to help you become a true #HungerFighter!
Together, we can end hunger. Please use #HungerActionMonth when posting on social media about this initiative.
