Coachella Valley Firebirds Hold Hockey Clinic at CC Boys & Girls Club

The excitement of the Coachella Valley Firebirds Ice Hockey team is heating up!  The new American Hockey League team will begin playing this fall in the soon-to-be-completed Acrisure Arena being built along Interstate 10 near the Classic Club.

On Thursday, the Firebirds held an Introduction to Street Hockey which teaches children the fundamentals of the sport of hockey.  One of the coaches participating in the free clinic was former Olympic Coach Shannon Miller who now serves as the Firebird’s Vice President of Branding and Community Relations.  Coach Miller previously served as the head coach of the Canadian national women’s hockey team which claimed gold at the 1997 IIHF World Women’s Championships as well as the silver medal in ice hockey at the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Two clinics holding 24 spots each were held Thursday at the Cathedral City Boys and Girls Club.  The clinics were arranged by age with the first clinic for children aged 7 years through 9 years old and the second clinic for children aged 10 years to 13 years old.  Rooting for the kids from the sidelines were Mayor Pro Tem Rita Lamb, Councilmember Nancy Ross, and Parks and Community Events Commissioners Gary Marshall, Robert Puentes and Steve Vericker. Thanks to a generous donation from Mayor Rita Lamb’s discretionary funds, the children had brand new hockey equipment to demonstrate their new skills.
