Community Update: A Message From Chris Parman, Communications and Events Manager…
Cathedral City is literally glowing when it comes to special events. As the Communications/Events Manager, I invite everyone to come and enjoy the Glo Run 5K/1M and Health Fair at the new Festival Lawn and in front of City Hall this Saturday from 3 pm to 11 pm. It is the first of its kind event to be held in the entire Coachella Valley. More than 1000 runners/walkers have already registered to light up the night sky with glow paint that covers them from head to toe. The runners begin the course in front of City Hall and meander through the downtown streets and back to City Hall for the finish line – all under the glow of black lights and a full moon. You can participate in this fun run by registering in advance at www.healthglo5k.com or on Saturday at the event as early as 5 pm. The one-mile walk begins at 7:30 pm and the five-kilometer run begins at 8:30 pm. The Glo Run and party is open to all ages.
If being a spectator is more your speed, simply come downtown to watch the fun run and enjoy the party atmosphere as a LIVE DJ spins the beats starting at 6:30 pm atop of City Hall’s 3rd floor balcony.
Prior to the Glo Run, the Cathedral City Rotary is hosting a Health Fair on the Festival Lawn adjacent to Bonta Restaurant and along East Palm Canyon Drive starting at 3 pm. The Health Fair provides health screenings, healthy eating/cooking demonstrations, food vendors, booths for community based organizations, exercise and karate expositions, and multiple prize giveaways! Free admission. Free parking in the Parking Garage or the lot next to the Parking Garage.
The Health Fair and Health Glo 5k/1M event is just one of several happening this Saturday. The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission also invites you to the Cathedral City D.A.T.A. (Digital Arts Technology Academy at CCHS) Film & Photo Competition on Saturday, May 2nd beginning at 5pm at the Mary Pickford Theatre. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in the categories of film and photo.
Attendees will view a special screening of the documentary entitled, “Dear Mom, Love Cher” – a fascinating tale of the family matriarch of one of the world’s biggest stars. The filmmakers will be available after the screening to answer questions from the audience. Additionally, a reception catered by Cello’s Pantry will be held on the mezzanine level of the Mary Pickford Theatre after the screening.
Best of all, the entire film and photo competition event is free! For more information, contact Jim Cox, Chair of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission at jim@jimcox.net
As we wind down the “Season” in the Desert, it is a great time to reflect on all the new events the City implemented or sponsored over the past year including the First Sunday’s Gourmet Food Truck Fare; 111 Mobile Music Fest; Seasonal Lights, Santa & Skating on Ice; Tinsel Town Hall; Movies in the Park; West Coast Artists’ Art Festival; Theater Square Market; Throwback Thursdays with Jersey Shore; Cathedral City Hot Air Balloon Festival; Cathedral City LGBT Days; the Health Fair and Health Glo 5K/1M Fun Run; and City Hall at Your Corner.
Coming this summer there are several events being planned including Battle of the Badges – boxing event on June 6; Cuisine & Art Tuesdays in July; and a citywide Back to School Savings Blowout; and the return of Throwback Thursdays with Jersey Shore in August through October.
As we look towards next “Season,” we are working on the expanded Theater Square Market with more vendors and gourmet food trucks, Interfusion Music Summit 5 and the 2nd Annual 111 Mobile Music Fest; the City becoming the title sponsor of El Dia de los Muertos; the brand new Taste of Jalisco Festival; and Bonta’s OctoberFest; and the return of the Movies in the Park; 2nd Annual Seasonal Lights, Santa, & Skating on Ice; Tinsel Town Hall; West Coast Artists’ Art Festivals; 2nd Annual Cathedral City Hot Air Balloon Festival; 2nd Annual Cathedral City LGBT Days; and the 2nd Annual Health Fair and Health Glo 5K/1M Fun Run.
Cathedral City is moving forward by bringing the community together, celebrating our diversity through special events, and strengthening our businesses with increased exposure and foot traffic. It is my pleasure to be a part of this exciting time in our City’s history and I encourage you to take part in the planning, implementation or simple enjoyment of all the great activities.
