The 2021 Nine Cities Blood Drive Challenge has begun! Today, Councilmember Rita Lamb helped Cathedral City in reaching the goal of the highest number of blood donations in the Coachella Valley during this two-month friendly competition hosted by LifeStream.
This first of three blood donation locations in Cathedral City occurred in front of Stater Bros. at the intersection Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive. Councilmember Lamb stated that it was important for her to give back to the blood bank as she was once a recipient of a blood donation after having her own medical issue in the past. She was very grateful to the person who donated blood when she needed it and wanted to return the favor for the next person.
Just one hour of your time can save the life of a family member, neighbor, or friend. The donation begins with a 30-minute medical consultation, 15 minutes of actual blood donating, and 15 minutes of resting after the blood donation while you drink water and enjoy chips, cookies, or some other tasty snack. Best of all, the blood drive was handing out free t-shirts, a beach towel and a $10 Stater Bros gift card as a thank you.
The amount of blood each person donates depends on their height and weight, but generally is in the range of a pint to a pint and half of blood. Councilmember Lamb, due to her smaller stature, was limited to donating the smaller amount. She stated that the process was very pleasant and giving blood did not even hurt.
Every two seconds, someone needs blood. Here in the Coachella Valley, especially in the summer months when our population dips by about 30 percent, we experience a local blood shortage and an increased need for residents to donate blood. And that’s why LifeStream is holding its annual 9 Cities Challenge Blood Drive this summer.
