As elementary school children continue to learn from home during the pandemic, Councilmember Rita Lamb reads Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax.” It is a story about preserving Earth’s natural resources for future generations and the importance of speaking out against the overcutting of trees and industrial pollution.
Councilmember Lamb previously served as a teacher and principal and understands the importance of reading to children as it builds their vocabulary. Children who are read to develop language and thinking skills. In fact, according to Early Childhood Alliance, the development of a child’s vocabulary is “one of the best predictors for how your child will do with reading comprehension. Reading encourages a child’s imagination and empathy, as it allows them to put themselves into the characters’ position. Reading also brings families together.”
It is often said, up to grade 3, a child learns to read. After grade 3, a child reads to learn.
