SUMMER SESSIONS WITH THE BONES BRIGADE │ World Premiere
Selected from the CVRep 2023 ORIGINS: NEW WORKS PROJECT
By Kirby Fields
Dates: December 6 – 17, 2023 (Preview/press performances – December 7 at 2 & 7 p.m.)
Summer Session with the Bones Brigade is set in the American Middle West in the summer of 1988. The play tells the story of four teenage skateboarders and their two female friends: Shane is the unofficial leader of the group; Heath prides himself on being an unrepentant jerk; Lee compulsively takes pictures with his Polaroid to feel close to his recently deceased father; DK has just moved back to town and desperately wants to transcend his reputation as a “poser”; Loralai fears new experiences so much that she fabricates an overbearing mother to shield her from any decisions of her own; and Sid, who tries to live down to her reputation, with disastrous results.
When one of them mysteriously disappears after a memorable skate session on the 4th of July, the gang fears the worst and directs their guilt and shame about their disappearance against one another. The circumstances surrounding the mystery of their absence proves to be especially damaging for Heath and Sid, as the complicated relationship among these three may (or may not) be the reason why their friend is gone.
The beautifully and uniquely staged play richly explores universal themes such as friendship, youth, and loss.
CVRep’s ORIGINS New Works Development Program was created to give birth to the next great theatrical work of art. ORIGINS is a safe, creative, collaborative and flexible environment for writers, directors and composers to see their work reach its full potential. Each project invited to join this process through ORIGINS is fully funded and produced by CVREP, right here in Coachella Valley.
Each season, one of these works is fully produced as part of our season, before being sent on to other theatres, and maybe one day, Broadway.
This is how Summer Session with The Bones Brigade became part of our 2023-2024 season. This is also why you should attend this World Premiere.
Support the future of theatre, and giving voice and opportunity to playwrights and original works. Be one of the very first to see Summer Session with the Bones Brigade, so one day you can say “I was there in the very beginning.”
